CMWU's central laboratory continues testing water quality despite the destruction of its original headquarters, supported by modern field equipment from international partners.
The team of CMWU's central laboratory continues its efforts to test and monitor the quality of water and wastewater, despite the challenges and difficult conditions facing the Gaza Strip. This comes with the aim of ensuring the safety of the water provided to residents, and preserving public health through continuous monitoring of water and wastewater sources.
The Utility had previously reactivated the laboratory and strengthened its capacities amid the Israeli war, with support from international institutions, by providing modern field equipment enabling the necessary tests to be carried out at various locations across the Strip, contributing to the continuity of laboratory work, particularly after the water utility's central laboratory was bombed and destroyed at the start of the war.
As part of efforts to strengthen water quality monitoring, the water utility, with support from UNICEF, distributed water quality testing devices to all the Strip's municipalities, aiming to enable municipal crews to carry out initial tests directly, and respond quickly to any potential changes in water quality.
The Utility affirmed that the laboratory is a fundamental pillar in the water quality monitoring system, gaining special importance amid the increasing reliance on desalination plants and non-conventional water sources, alongside the continued need to monitor sanitation and wastewater networks to preserve public health and the environment.
The Utility stressed that reactivating the laboratory, even in a limited, field-based form, represents a vital step to ensure the continuity of safe water services, and avoid the health risks that could result from using unsafe or contaminated water, calling on the international community to provide further support to ensure the sustainability of these vital efforts.
