A delegation from the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) reviewed maintenance projects involving electrical generators and the rehabilitation of wastewater pumps, implemented by CMWU with funding from the ICRC across the Gaza Strip.
The works include maintenance of generators serving several water and wastewater facilities and stormwater collection basins, as well as the maintenance and rehabilitation of wastewater pumping stations, particularly central stations serving large numbers of residents and displaced people. These interventions aim to improve operational readiness and enhance the facilities’ capacity to function, especially during the rainy season.
The works are part of preparations for the rainy season and aim to reduce the risk of wastewater overflows and rainwater accumulation in residential areas and neighborhoods, which could pose health and environmental risks to residents and displaced people.
CMWU has previously issued an urgent appeal for action and the provision of the resources and supplies needed to strengthen winter preparedness, amid significant challenges facing maintenance and operational work, including shortages of spare parts and essential equipment.
CMWU continues to carry out maintenance and rehabilitation works within the available resources and in cooperation with its partners, in order to maintain the readiness of critical facilities, support the continuity of water and wastewater services, and reduce risks that could affect residents and displacement shelters during the winter.
