CMWU Continues Emergency Maintenance Works on Water and Wastewater Networks in Gaza City

Published on

CMWU, in cooperation with Gaza Municipality and with support from the ICRC, continues to carry out emergency maintenance works on water and wastewater networks in several areas of Gaza City. These efforts aim to maintain the continuity of essential services and address faults and damage to infrastructure caused by Israeli bombardment.

The works included Ramallah Street in the Tal Al-Hawa neighborhood, where teams responded to residents’ complaints and appeals regarding the failure of four secondary water lines connected to the main transmission line due to damage caused by bombardment in the area. The teams carried out excavation works along a 48-meter stretch, decommissioned the secondary lines extending toward the destroyed streets, and installed replacement water pipes with a total length of 24 meters. They also removed damaged connections, backfilled the excavations, and leveled the site, helping improve water services for approximately 7,000 people.

On Fatima Al-Zahra Street, near Al-Bandar Clinic, the teams repaired an 8-inch wastewater line following repeated sewage overflows that had created a health hazard in the area. The works included excavation along a 10-meter stretch, installation of a new 3-meter pipe, and rehabilitation of the remaining section of the existing line. The teams also cleaned six wastewater manholes, each 80 cm in diameter, reinforced the line and adjusted its gradient, then backfilled the excavations and rehabilitated the road. These interventions are expected to help reduce sewage overflows and improve health and environmental conditions for approximately 5,000 people.

In the Tal Al-Hawa neighborhood, on Street 8 east of Al-Dahdouh Roundabout, the teams also excavated and exposed six main wastewater manholes, each 1.25 meters in diameter and up to 4 meters deep. Three of the manholes had been completely buried, causing blockages in the connected secondary networks. The teams exposed and cleaned the manholes and removed obstructions hindering wastewater flow. The interventions also extended to the eastern street near Abdel Aal Factory, where another manhole was exposed and cleaned after a blockage caused sewage to overflow onto the street.

The work sites were visited by an ICRC delegation accompanied by a CMWU team to review the progress of the maintenance works and follow up on field needs related to water and wastewater services.

CMWU continues its urgent field interventions to repair damaged networks and address faults and blockages, helping improve the efficiency of water and wastewater services, reduce health and environmental risks, and alleviate the suffering of residents and displaced people amid the current circumstances.
