CMWU operated an alternative well in Deir al-Balah (50 cubic meters per hour) after the targeting of the Al-Sahel 6 well's generator and the Mekorot cutoff, serving 15,000 people.
Operation of an Alternative Well in Deir al-Balah to Compensate for Water Shortage After the Targeting of the Al-Sahel 6 Water Well
CMWU, in cooperation with Deir al-Balah Municipality and the local community, operated a private well with a pumping capacity of 50 cubic meters per hour, where a power generator was rented to operate the well in cooperation with the International Committee of the Red Cross, and the well was connected to the municipality's water distribution network.
The number of beneficiaries from the operation of this well is estimated at about 15,000 people, in a step aimed at easing the severity of the water crisis and ensuring the minimum level of water supplies amid the emergency conditions facing the Strip.
This comes amid the continuing Israeli war on the Gaza Strip, where the Al-Sahel 6 water well went completely out of service, after the electric generator specific to the well was directly targeted by occupation forces, causing it to stop working. This is in addition to the continued cutoff of Mekorot water supplies to the Central Governorate from the Israeli side since January 2025, which led to an acute shortage in the quantities of water reaching the Birka reservoir in Deir al-Balah city, considered an essential facility within the water system, feeding wide areas of the city.
It is worth noting that the crisis has worsened in recent days, with a number of other wells unable to be operated, namely Al-Ma'ani, Al-Qastal, Al-Muntazah, Al-Mazraa, and Al-Sina'iya, due to the danger of the sites and the difficulty of accessing them.
