Signing an Agreement to Transfer the Management and Operation of the Sewage Treatment Plant North of Gaza and Its Components
The Water Authority and CMWU signed an agreement to transfer the management and operation of the sewage treatment plant north of Gaza and its components, with the agreement aiming to set a three-year roadmap for transferring the responsibilities of operation and maintenance management for the plant to the Utility, with the necessary technical and administrative arrangements made to achieve this agreement.
The agreement, signed by the Chairman of the Water Authority Eng. Mazen Ghunaim and the Chairman of CMWU's Board of Directors Dr. Majed Abu Ramadan, included the importance of strengthening integrated and sustainable water management, and the agreement includes a set of clauses that will contribute to supporting and facilitating the optimal management of the plant to serve more than 400,000 residents in North Gaza, through the sewage management sustainability project funded by the World Bank.
Eng. Mazen Ghunaim affirmed that cooperation and coordination with CMWU is extensive and built on a genuine partnership in facing the challenges of this important sector, amid great responsibility that required all relevant parties to unite to sustain vital facilities, provide additional resources, and improve the services provided to residents, praising the efforts of the Utility and its crews working in various locations.
Eng. Ghunaim explained that with the opening of each project, there is a tangible improvement in the water sector at the level of drinking water supply and sewage treatment, which pushes toward strengthening the steps aimed at completing the reform and development program in the water and sanitation sector, in a way that contributes to preserving the efficiency of these water facilities, which is among the priorities of the Water Authority and the supporting and donor bodies for these projects.
For his part, Dr. Majed Abu Ramadan said that this agreement is an additional step to strengthen the capacities and support the institutional work in providing water and sanitation services to residents of the Gaza Strip, which CMWU has borne a large part of the responsibility for over the years with support from the Water Authority and donor bodies, which contributed to overcoming numerous obstacles.
He affirmed that CMWU seeks to be a model water utility at the national level, with the expertise and technical and administrative capacities it has gained throughout its work, which strengthens the stability of the institutional work related to providing water and sanitation services on one hand, and the development and sustainability of operation and maintenance programs today and in the future, praising the Water Authority's role in supporting these directions.
It is worth noting that the plant, which began operating in early March 2018, includes the treatment plant, filtration basins, the main pumping station, and the pressure line, in addition to the equalization and emergency basins. The project, located east of Jabalia, north of the Strip, was implemented with a capacity exceeding 35,000 cubic meters daily.
