CMWU, in cooperation with Gaza Municipality and with generous support from the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), successfully restored the operation of Wastewater Pumping Station No. (5) “Al-Baqqara” by installing a submersible pump with a pumping capacity of 500 m³/hour.
This intervention is part of the proactive measures being implemented by CMWU in preparation for the station’s cleaning and rehabilitation project. The works include cleaning the dry pump chamber and inspecting the mechanical system, which was submerged in wastewater and filled with debris resulting from the recent war, in preparation for transferring the equipment to maintenance workshops for rehabilitation.
The works also included comprehensive maintenance of the pump and the provision of a new control panel to operate it, ensuring the efficiency and sustainability of the system.
The submersible pumping system provides an alternative to the main pumping system during emergencies, helping reduce health risks and ensure the continuity of wastewater services.
As part of this intervention, Gaza Municipality redirected wastewater from the stormwater filtration ponds in Sheikh Radwan to Pumping Station No. (5) “Al-Baqqara,” from where it is conveyed through the pressure pipeline to Al-Zaytoun Station (7B), which then transfers the wastewater to the Sheikh Ajleen ponds. This contributes to improving the efficiency of wastewater management in Gaza City.
These interventions are part of emergency and life-saving response programs, through repurposing and recycling available materials and used equipment, amid the continued restrictions on the entry of equipment, materials, and spare parts into the Gaza Strip, helping ensure the continuity of water and wastewater services and reduce health and environmental risks.
