
A delegation from KfW and the EU visits proposed sites for rainwater and solar power projects in Rafah, Khan Younis, and Wadi Al-Salqa.
As part of the mission of the German Development Bank KfW's delegation at CMWU this week, to closely review the progress of projects funded by the German government through KfW, and in preparation for a package of rainwater and solar power projects, a joint delegation from KfW and the European Union conducted field visits to the places most exposed to rainwater flooding during the rainy season and which need infrastructure to solve their flooding problems. The visiting delegation was accompanied during the visits to the projects' proposed sites by Eng. Maher Al-Najjar, CMWU's Deputy Executive Director for Engineering and Planning, Eng. Fareed Ashour, Director of the Central Gaza Sanitation Project, Eng. Yahya Abu Obeid, Advisor to the Executive Director for Sanitation Affairs (Director of the Khan Younis Treatment Plant), and Eng. Mo'taz Abu Al-Qumbuz, Head of the Projects Design Section. The visiting delegation included the Technical Director of Projects at the German Development Bank Ms. Anja Volk, Mr. Wadah Al-Hamdallah, Deputy Director of the KfW office, Mr. Bert Hagenkort, Energy Projects Consultant at KfW, and Ms. Ivanka Todorova, Water and Sanitation Program Manager at the European Union.
The tour began with a visit to Al-Jineina basin, which will be supplied with a pumping station to transfer surplus water via a pressure line to a filtration basin west of Rafah city, and the delegation also visited the western rainwater basin in Rafah, proposed to be supplied with an electricity network to ensure the system's operation through the public network, in addition to constructing several filtration wells at the basin.
The tour also included a visit to the Saudi reservoir in Rafah city, which will be supplied with a solar power system to ensure its operation for the greatest possible number of hours, and also included a visit to "Al-Amal" rainwater collection basin, where the proposed rainwater lines on Jamal Abdel Nasser Street and Halima Street in Khan Younis city will be connected to the main line leading to that basin.
At the end of the tour, a visit was made to the site of the proposed project to solve the Wadi Al-Salqa problem, which involves constructing a rainwater culvert in the low-lying area where rainwater accumulates, and transporting it to the sea.
