CMWU Supplies the Three Seawater Desalination Plants in the Gaza Strip with the Chemicals Needed for the Desalination Process

CMWU supplied the three seawater desalination plants extending along the Gaza Strip's coastal strip with the chemicals needed to desalinate seawater, with this coming as part of the emergency repair and maintenance project linked to combating the coronavirus, implemented by CMWU in cooperation with the German development organization GIZ, coming in the context of the project to support residents' stability in the Gaza Strip funded by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ).
These materials are considered essential for the continued operation of those plants and supplying residents with water, particularly amid the coronavirus pandemic and its heavy repercussions on all aspects of life in the Gaza Strip, as those plants serve residents in Gaza city, in addition to Rafah and Khan Younis cities south of the Strip and Deir al-Balah in the central Strip.
The €1 million project aims to enable CMWU to provide a minimum level of water and sanitation services amid the continuing spread of the coronavirus pandemic, by carrying out emergency repair and maintenance works for various water and sanitation facilities.
This project includes supplying spare parts to maintain water and sanitation facilities and carrying out maintenance and rehabilitation works for 20 water wells and 10 sewage pumping stations in various areas of the Gaza Strip, in addition to supplying chlorine solution for 6 months for use in disinfecting the water pumped into the distribution networks and chemicals for desalination plants, and the agreement also includes supplying materials and protective equipment against the coronavirus, in addition to implementing training programs for workers in the water and sanitation sector to enable them to work amid the coronavirus pandemic, as well as awareness programs for coronavirus prevention.
COVID-19 Related Emergency Maintenance and Repairs Support to Essential Service Provision
In the frame of “Strengthening the Resilience of Gaza’s Population” project financed by the German Ministry of Economic Cooperation and Development, the Municipal Coastal Water Utility (CMWU), through a Grant Agreement with GIZ is implementing a COVID-19 Related Emergency Maintenance and Repairs Project. The 12-month EUR 1 million project aims at supporting CMWU in maintaining a minimum level of safe WASH services that are essential in curbing the spread of COVID-19 in the densely populated Gaza Strip.
Inter alia, this project will focus on enhancing the emergency preparedness and response capacities of the CMWU as they are a critical input to curb the outbreak of COVID-19. Projects activities include:
- Devise COVID-19 emergence maintenance and repairs response plans.
- Conducting COVID-19 emergency hygiene training for CMWU staff members/operators.
- Undertaking emergency maintenance and repairs for a selected number of WASH facilities.
- Equipping CMWU with critical spare parts and materials for undertaking urgently needed maintenance and repair works of essential WASH facilities.
- Procurement of chemical substances and disinfectants needed for WASH facilities, such as sodium hypochlorite solution, chemicals for decentralised desalination plants, etc.
- Conducting public awareness campaigns to the citizens about COVID-19 and WASH related issues using various media platforms, including COVID-19 related hygiene publications/messages.
This project is a German contribution through GIZ; and it is complementary to the overall efforts to meet the urgent COVID-19 related maintenance and repairs needs of CMWU in the Gaza Strip.
