CMWU Denounces the Attack on the Temporary Sewage Collection and Treatment Basins in Wadi Gaza

CMWU denounces and expresses its deep regret over the attack on the sewage collection and treatment basins in Wadi Gaza, where unidentified persons attacked the basins and caused a large tear, 100 meters long, in the lining layer of the second basin, leading to the leakage of sewage water to the side opposite the basin. This attack will also delay the completion of work on the basins and their final handover, and repairing the tear in the lining layer will require stopping the pumping of sewage water into the basin and completely emptying it of wastewater.

CMWU had overseen the construction of three basins for collecting and treating sewage water in Wadi Gaza, with the aim of improving the environmental reality in the area, as a first step towards restoring the environmental standing of Wadi Gaza and preserving it as a nature reserve. The work on the basins was completed despite numerous obstacles represented in the difficulty of bringing in the necessary materials and equipment due to the repeated closure of crossings and the continuing siege on the Gaza Strip, and those basins are still in the trial operation phase before being received from the contractor.

As CMWU strongly denounces the attack that occurred on the sewage collection basins in Wadi Gaza, it fears the repetition of such attacks on other facilities and installations, and therefore calls on the responsible authorities to put an end to the attacks on the basins and legally pursue the perpetrators and hold them accountable for their actions, to prevent the repetition of such attacks and the environmental and health damage that may result from them affecting residents.
