CMWU received a high-level UN delegation that included Ms. Suzanne Takaljic, Acting Humanitarian Coordinator for the occupied Palestinian territory, and Ms. Jean Gough, UNICEF Representative in Palestine, during a field visit the delegation made to the seawater desalination plant south of the Gaza Strip.

The delegation was received by CMWU Deputy Executive Director Eng. Omar Shatat, and the desalination plant's manager Eng. Ahmed Al-Rubai, alongside the technical crew operating the plant.

The visit aimed to review the progress of work at the plant, particularly amid the challenges it faces after its permanent electricity line was cut off. The tour also included an assessment of the drinking water supply program for displaced residents, via the water utility's water networks and transport tankers.

During the visit, the technical crews provided a comprehensive explanation of the procedures and needs required to provide water to the residents of the central and southern governorates, and the displaced persons who have moved there, in addition to reviewing the challenges hindering the continuity of water and sanitation service delivery, foremost among them the shortage of equipment, generators, and spare parts, as well as the restrictions imposed as a result of the closure of the crossings, and the difficulty of safe access to work sites.

This visit is part of joint efforts to strengthen cooperation between the water utility and partner international organizations with support from the Palestinian Water Authority, to ensure the continuity of essential services for residents amid the difficult humanitarian conditions facing the Gaza Strip.
