CMWU's Chairman of the Board of Directors Dr. Majed Awni Abu Ramadan received this Thursday morning a high-level German delegation, during their visit to the Central Sewage Treatment Plant east of Al-Bureij, central Gaza Strip. The delegation was also received by CMWU's Executive Director Eng. Monther Shoblaq, Eng. Maher Al-Najjar, KfW Projects Department Director, Eng. Mohammed Al-Qeshawi, Treatment Plant Director, Eng. Yasmine Bashir, Head of the Projects Coordination Department, and Ms. Taghreed Al-Khudari, Administrative and Financial Officer. The visiting delegation included Ms. Christiane Laibach, Member of the Executive Board of the German Development Bank, Mr. Marc Engelhardt, Director of the German Development Bank for the Middle East, Mr. David Konzi, Director of the German Development Bank's office in Ramallah, Mr. Wadah Al-Hamdallah, Deputy Director of the German Development Bank's office in Ramallah, and Eng. Farid Ashour, KfW Projects Coordinator in the Gaza Strip.
In turn, Dr. Majed Awni Abu Ramadan welcomed the visiting German delegation, praising the great German interest in developing various sectors, most importantly the water and sanitation sector in the Gaza Strip, through supporting and funding the implementation of numerous water and sanitation projects, commending the excellent cooperation and genuine partnership with the German side, which resulted in the completion of the treatment plant project, one of the foremost strategic projects at the national level, relying on the latest technology in sewage treatment and generating electric power from the biogas produced by the treatment process, in addition to the solar power generation unit at the plant. This plant contributed to ending the environmental disaster in the Gaza Valley area by receiving sewage water coming from all areas of the Central Governorate and Gaza city, treating it safely, and re-pumping it into the Gaza Valley watercourse.
The two sides discussed during the meeting the proposal for the future expansion of the Central Treatment Plant, and the meeting also included a detailed explanation of the role played by CMWU in the Gaza Strip in improving the services provided to residents, in addition to briefing the visiting German delegation on the reality of the water sector's services and its challenges, and the progress of projects whose implementation procedures CMWU has begun, funded by the German government through KfW, such as energy efficiency improvement projects and rainwater projects in various areas of the Gaza Strip, in addition to presenting the most important needs of CMWU to ensure its continued provision of services to the Strip's residents. The visit also included a detailed explanation of the most important components and facilities of the treatment plant and its workflow.
