CMWU received a delegation from UNICEF headed by UNICEF's Representative in Palestine Ms. Lucia Elmi, on Wednesday, May 26, at CMWU's main headquarters in Al-Zahra city, central Gaza Strip, where the delegation was received by CMWU's Director-General Eng. Monther Shoblaq, his Deputy for Planning and Projects Affairs Eng. Maher Al-Najjar, and Eng. Yasmine Bashir, Projects Coordination Officer.
The two sides discussed the impact of the Israeli aggression on the progress of work on the seawater desalination plant expansion project south of the Gaza Strip and any resulting delay in the project's completion date, as the development works aim to raise the plant's production capacity to 20,000 cubic meters per day to serve wide areas of Rafah and Khan Younis cities, and the discussion also addressed the effective role of the emergency warehouses funded by UNICEF in completing emergency maintenance works during the war period for facilities and water and sanitation networks damaged as a result of Israeli bombardment, to ensure the continued supply of water and sanitation services to residents.
In turn, Eng. Monther Shoblaq praised UNICEF's rapid response in supplying the fuel needed to operate the main water and sanitation facilities amid the reduced electricity connection hours as a result of damage to the electricity networks and lines feeding the Gaza Strip.
The damage sustained by the infrastructure of the water and sanitation sector was also discussed, and the need to unite efforts to search for urgent funding to repair the damage was affirmed, with CMWU's crews, in cooperation with the technical crews at all municipalities of the Gaza Strip, working to count it and include it in the damage assessment report, expected to be completed during the coming week for review and approval by the Water Authority and partner organizations from the WASH cluster, before presenting it to donor organizations to fund the reconstruction program.
