CMWU today received Mr. Edouard Beigbeder, UNICEF Regional Director for the Middle East and North Africa, and his accompanying delegation, during a field visit to the Central Area seawater desalination plant, in the presence of representatives from the Gaza Electricity Distribution Company.

The delegation was received by Eng. Omar Shatat, CMWU Deputy Executive Director, along with a number of the engineering and administrative teams operating the plant.

The visit aimed to review the progress of work at the plant and follow up on the ongoing works to connect it to the permanent electricity grid, in addition to discussing various aspects related to joint programs and projects in the water and sanitation sector, particularly those related to the post-ceasefire phase and the urgent and emergency response operations provided to citizens and displaced persons amid the difficult humanitarian conditions imposed by the war on the Gaza Strip.

The two sides also discussed operational needs and current challenges, foremost among them the need to allow the entry of the materials, equipment, spare parts, and consumables required to ensure the continuity of a minimum level of life-saving services, while affirming the importance of strengthening cooperation between CMWU, UNICEF, and the electricity distribution company to ensure the continued operation of vital facilities.

The visit concluded with an affirmation of the importance of preparing for the upcoming stages, including the recovery and reconstruction phase, to ensure the improvement of services provided and strengthen the sector's ability to face future challenges.
