CMWU Participates in a Conference on the Humanitarian Situation in the Gaza Strip After the Israeli Aggression

CMWU participated in the conference on the humanitarian situation in the Gaza Strip after the recent Israeli aggression on the Strip, organized by the Palestinian Center for Human Rights, with the conference's participants including CMWU's Director-General Eng. Monther Shoblaq, Gaza Municipality's Mayor Dr. Yahya Al-Sarraj, Dr. Medhat Abbas representing the Ministry of Health, and Dr. Hala Al-Zabda representing the Energy Authority.
In turn, Mr. Raji Sourani, Director of the Palestinian Center for Human Rights, welcomed the attendees, noting that this conference came to discuss the effects of the aggression on the Gaza Strip amid the continuing Israeli siege on the Gaza Strip and the spread of the coronavirus pandemic.
In turn, Eng. Monther Shoblaq affirmed that the occupation's targeting of roads and main intersections led to massive destruction in infrastructure and water and sanitation networks, noting that sewage water leaked for several days in public places as a result of the occupation's bombing of the main sewage lines, particularly those transporting to treatment plants, with the effects of this appearing in the long term, in addition to numerous damages to water and sanitation networks that will appear during the coming days as a result of the concussion bombs used by the occupation, the effects of which reach the target location and other distant places, thereby affecting those networks.
Eng. Monther Shoblaq also explained that CMWU had previously, in cooperation with the International Committee of the Red Cross and all the Strip's municipalities, prepared an emergency work plan, with 11 emergency warehouses equipped in all areas of the Gaza Strip containing spare parts, in addition to training CMWU's and the municipalities' crews to work during emergencies, particularly during wars, which contributed to the speed of response by maintenance crews to temporarily repair the war's damage, aiming to ensure the continuation of water and sanitation services at the minimum level possible, in addition to coding CMWU's and the municipalities' vehicles with numbers specific to water services and providing the International Committee of the Red Cross with those codes, in order to prevent the Israeli occupation from targeting the technical crews during their field work.
Noting the Israeli occupation's failure to respond, during this aggression, to the Red Cross's requests to coordinate for technical crews to repair some damage and operate some facilities in Beit Lahia, Gaza, Jabalia, and Khan Younis, which exposed the technical teams to the risk of being targeted in many areas, calling on all parties and international organizations to provide protection to the crews working during the Israeli attacks on the Gaza Strip.
