CMWU Signs an Agreement to Clean Sewage Basins and Pumping Stations in Rafah and Beit Lahia Governorates
CMWU signed an agreement to implement a project to drain and clean the sewage basins and pumping stations at the treatment plants in both Rafah and Beit Lahia governorates, funded by the Polish Humanitarian Action Foundation and in cooperation with Rafah Municipality and Beit Lahia Municipality, at a cost of $180,000.
The signing of the agreement was attended by Eng. Monther Shoblaq, CMWU's Director-General, Mr. Andrzej, Director of the Polish Humanitarian Action Foundation's office in the Gaza Strip, and Ms. Marta, Director of the Foundation's office in the Palestinian Territories.
In his remarks, Eng. Shoblaq explained that CMWU will directly oversee the implementation of this project, with the works to be carried out at both the wastewater treatment plant in Rafah and the wastewater treatment plant in Beit Lahia, and the work will include draining and cleaning the anaerobic basins and removing sludge and sediment from those basins and transporting it to an appropriate landfill, as well as draining and cleaning the wet chambers at the pumping stations, with concrete maintenance works also to be carried out on the edges of the basins, with the project's works to be completed within five months.
Shoblaq added that the goal of this project is to protect the infrastructure and water network system from sewage water overflow and its mixing with drinking water, thereby protecting public health and the general environment of residents living in Beit Lahia and Rafah, and that cleaning the sewage basins contributes to increasing the efficiency of sewage water treatment at the treatment plants in the targeted areas, with the number of beneficiaries estimated at about 937,000 residents.
In closing his remarks, Shoblaq praised the role of the Polish Humanitarian Action Foundation in supporting and funding projects to improve water and sanitation services in the Gaza Strip, and stressed the importance of continuing cooperation to achieve greater benefit for residents.
For her part, Ms. Marta Kazubska, Director of the Polish Humanitarian Action Foundation's office in the Palestinian Territories, expressed her happiness at working with CMWU and her hope for the continuation of cooperation in implementing projects that would improve infrastructure and the environment in the Gaza Strip.
