CMWU Implements Projects Worth $18 Million
CMWU implemented a series of vital and important projects during the past year 2012, estimated to cost about $18 million, with generous funding from numerous donor institutions.
CMWU's Director-General Eng. Monther Shoblaq said that the projects in the water and sanitation sectors aim to advance the level of quality and quantity of water and the sanitation services provided to the Strip's residents.
Shoblaq explained, in a statement, that among the most prominent of these projects was a package to improve and develop sanitation services, which included projects to develop the treatment plants in Rafah, Khan Younis, and Gaza, as well as beginning the construction of a temporary plant in the Wadi Gaza area, in addition to maintaining and developing sewage pumping stations in various areas of the Strip, and also constructing a new sewage pumping station in Bani Suheila city, at a total cost reaching $8 million.
Eng. Monther Shoblaq also pointed out that the Utility completed a number of sewage network development projects and laying new networks in various areas of the Strip, including a pressure line connecting the Al-Hawaber station to the northern treatment basins, worth $4 million.
As for improving water services, they had a large share of the projects during the past year, the most important of which were:
1- The project to construct a water reservoir in Al-Maghraqa with a pumping station, in addition to conveyance lines and distribution networks in that area, worth $1 million.
2- The water projects also included projects to lay new water networks and household connections, as well as new meters in some areas, in addition to developing all the existing water wells in the Gaza Strip and drilling a new water well in Al-Qarara, worth $1 million.
The desalination plants had a large share of its projects during the past year, as:
The Utility began a project to develop the seawater desalination plant in Deir al-Balah to increase its production capacity to reach 2,500 cubic meters per day, with generous funding from the Islamic Development Bank worth $2.2 million, while a number of desalination plants were installed for a number of saline wells to improve the quality of the water produced, including the Al-Furqan well and Taj Al-Waqar in Al-Nuseirat.
All these projects, in addition to the continuous supply and distribution of disinfection materials, chlorine, and fuel to ensure the continuity of work for all wells and desalination plants in the Gaza Strip, at a total annual cost estimated at $1 million.
Eng. Monther Shoblaq affirmed that CMWU, in cooperation with the Water Authority, is seeking to continue securing the financial support necessary to implement more projects aimed at qualitatively improving water supply and improving the collection and utilization of sewage water and rainwater, within the framework of the national strategic plan for the water sector, which is expected to reach about $250 million by 2017.
In closing his remarks, Eng. Monther Shoblaq, CMWU's Director-General, extended his thanks to all the international institutions that supported the completion of these projects, and also extended his thanks for the support and cooperation provided by some national institutions towards the success of these projects, including the Palestinian Water Authority, the Ministry of Finance, and the Ministry of Local Government, and that a workshop would soon be called to present these achievements and CMWU's plan for projects for the period 2013 onward.
