CMWU, with Support from UNICEF, Provides Three Electric Generators to Operate Central Water Wells in North Gaza
CMWU, with support from the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF), provided three electric generators to operate a number of central water wells in North Gaza, in response to the growing needs of residents in areas to which citizens returned following the recent truce. The technical crews had previously worked to rehabilitate and equip the target wells and connect them to the municipalities' water networks, contributing to resuming water pumping operations and improving its reach to thousands of citizens, whether in their homes or in shelter centers and tents.
The target wells are among the important water sources in North Gaza given their high production capacities and the quality of the extracted water, which falls within accepted international standards, strengthening the municipalities' ability to provide larger quantities of water to residents amid the exceptional conditions facing the Strip.
The wells benefiting from these generators included the Al-Tuba well in Beit Lahia city, with a production capacity of 70 cubic meters per hour, and the new Al-Nazla well in Jabalia, with a production capacity of up to 100 cubic meters per hour, in addition to the Alwan well in Jabalia, with a production capacity of 140 cubic meters per hour, contributing to increasing the quantities of water available and improving the continuity of supply to the beneficiary areas.
It is worth noting that the water and sanitation sector in the Gaza Strip still faces major challenges hindering the sustainability of operating vital facilities, foremost among them the acute shortage of fuel, oils, spare parts, and operational materials needed for maintenance and operation, which threatens the continuity of providing water and sanitation services and increases the difficulty of maintaining the minimum level of service provided to residents, amid the humanitarian situation and exceptional conditions facing the Strip.
CMWU also highly values the continued humanitarian efforts and support provided by UNICEF to the water sector in the Gaza Strip, through its urgent interventions and projects aimed at strengthening water and sanitation services and ensuring the continuity of its work at the minimum possible level, contributing to improving the level of essential services provided to residents and displaced persons and easing the severity of the current humanitarian crisis.
