CMWU Continues Developing the Al-Amal Rainwater Collection and Filtration Basin in Khan Younis

CMWU Continues Work on the Al-Amal Rainwater Collection and Filtration Basin Development Project

CMWU, in cooperation with Khan Younis Municipality, continues implementing the works of the Al-Amal rainwater collection and filtration basin development project in Al-Amal neighborhood in Khan Younis, funded by the Arab Organization for the Reconstruction of Gaza and the Islamic Development Bank with $4 million.

This project comes within the framework of the projects implemented by CMWU as part of its strategy to support and protect the groundwater aquifer from pollution and maximize the benefit from rainwater by filtering it into the ground and strengthening the quantities of water feeding the groundwater aquifer, with about 400,000 cubic meters expected to be filtered annually.

On the other hand, this project will contribute to solving the water flooding problem that causes severe damage to residents living near the basin, in addition to providing green spaces used by residents as a recreational park, especially since the Al-Amal neighborhood area lacks recreational places.

The project includes various construction elements, including building the rainwater filtration basin on an area of 15 dunums, a sand sedimentation basin and the concrete culvert connecting them, and constructing the concrete slopes, in addition to constructing a service building including a room for the electrical panels necessary to operate the pump located inside the basin, a guard room, a fence around the entire perimeter of the basin, and a green recreational area within the boundaries of the rainwater collection basin.

The project also includes constructing a pumping station with a capacity of 2,700 cubic meters per hour to pump the rainwater exceeding the basin's absorption capacity towards another filtration basin next to the sewage collection and treatment basins west of Khan Younis, to achieve maximum benefit from the collected rainwater, with work underway at full speed for the project to come into service before this year's winter.

It is worth noting that CMWU had begun, 7 years ago, also as part of its strategy to improve water and sanitation services and in cooperation with numerous donor institutions, separating the rainwater network system from the sewage network system in Khan Younis city, in order to prevent rainwater from mixing with sewage water.

CMWU had begun work by constructing rainwater collection networks and sewage networks and household connections, and separating the sewage lines illegally connected to the rainwater lines by many residents, whereby sewage water is collected and pumped towards the treatment plant and rainwater is pumped towards Al-Amal basin to benefit from it.
