CMWU carried out emergency maintenance on the seawater desalination plant south of the Gaza Strip, in order to ensure the continuation of its operation and prevent it from going out of service, as that plant is considered one of the important water sources that has been developed, currently serving some western areas of Rafah and Khan Younis cities, south of the Gaza Strip, and pumping about 6,000 cubic meters of water daily to those areas, with work underway to expand it so that its production capacity reaches 20,000 cubic meters/day, enabling it to serve wide areas of Khan Younis and Rafah governorates, funded by the European Union through UNICEF, in cooperation with CMWU and the Palestinian Water Authority.
It is worth noting that the three seawater desalination plants constructed over the past few years in the Gaza Strip are working effectively to improve the quality of water provided to residents in various areas of the Gaza Strip, in addition to contributing to easing the burden on the groundwater aquifer, which represents the sole source of water in the Gaza Strip.
