Emergency Maintenance of a Wastewater Transmission Line in Gaza City

Published on

As part of the implementation of the emergency plan to operate wastewater pumping stations and transmission lines leading to the Sheikh Ajleen treatment ponds, while separating them from the rainwater drainage networks, CMWU, in cooperation with Gaza Municipality, with support from the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), and in partnership with the Palestinian Water Authority, carried out an emergency field intervention to address a leak in a wastewater transmission line near Al-Zaytoun Station in Gaza City.

The intervention was carried out during the operation and inspection of the transmission line leading to Al-Zaytoun Station, following the detection of a leak that caused wastewater to overflow onto the street. The works included 12 meters of excavation to expose a 450 mm-diameter transmission line extending from Al-Baqara Station to Al-Zaytoun Station. Field works showed that part of the line had shifted from its original alignment. It was therefore repositioned, reconnected, and properly secured.

Following completion of the maintenance works, the line was tested by pumping wastewater from Al-Baqara Station on Al-Nakheel Street toward Al-Zaytoun Station. The test confirmed the integrity of the line, its operational efficiency, and the absence of any leaks.

The line serves large areas of Gaza City, including Sheikh Radwan and the neighborhoods surrounding Al-Nasr Street, benefiting approximately 80,000 residents. These works are part of ongoing efforts to strengthen the readiness of the wastewater system, prepare for the winter season, and reduce the risks of wastewater overflows and associated health and environmental hazards.
