Beginning Implementation of the Rainwater Drainage Project in Al-Wafaa Area in Cooperation Between CMWU, Khan Younis Municipality, and the Palestinian Water Authority

CMWU, in cooperation with Khan Younis Municipality and the Palestinian Water Authority, began implementing the rainwater drainage project in Al-Wafaa area in Khan Younis, generously funded by the State of Kuwait through UNICEF at a cost of $1.5 million.
Khan Younis Municipality's Mayor and member of CMWU's Board of Directors Eng. Alaa Al-Din Al-Batta affirmed that the project will end residents' decades-long suffering, particularly as the area is considered one of the lowest-lying areas in Khan Younis, with rainwater arriving to it from all parts of the governorate, noting that it will include constructing an underground concrete culvert at varying depths to reach the engineering gradients needed to ensure the smooth drainage of water from the aforementioned area, reaching the main collection pool located north of Al-Amal neighborhood.
Eng. Al-Batta stressed that the Municipality has spared no effort to secure the financial support required to implement the project with all its components, in cooperation with CMWU, in order to upgrade sanitation and rainwater services for the residents of Khan Younis city, noting that the project will also include paving the area's streets and side roads.
In turn, CMWU's Director-General Eng. Monther Shoblaq affirmed the importance of the project for Al-Wafaa area, which had suffered during past winter seasons, noting that the rainwater drainage line will be connected to the existing network, reaching directly to the main collection pool north of Al-Amal neighborhood, in addition to rehabilitating the basin and constructing surrounding fences to protect it, aiming to put in place a radical solution to the problem of rainwater flooding for the area's residents during the winter season and making the most of rainwater by filtering it into the groundwater aquifer.
Eng. Shoblaq affirmed that the project will work to strengthen the groundwater aquifer, by injecting half a million cubic meters of rainwater annually, achieving benefit from rainwater in a way that serves the public interest and community safety, explaining that CMWU seeks to protect residents and their property from the risks of the winter season by implementing vital projects to ease their suffering.
The project also includes constructing a concrete culvert starting from Al-Kasiha Street reaching Al-Khulafa Mosque in Al-Akkad camp, passing through Al-Hamamiya Street and then Al-Wafaa area and heading north through Al-Katiba Street and then the western Al-Hajer area "Al-Mutawa'a", reaching the rainwater collection pool in Al-Amal neighborhood.
The project also consists of three phases, which include extending concrete pipes of various diameters, (1,175) meters long, and constructing a box culvert of various diameters, (1,110) meters long, and installing (29) manholes and (50) rainwater drains, and a plastic pipe network, (700) meters long, in addition to extending a rainwater line on the old Al-Hilal Street reaching Al-Katiba, (700) meters long, and paving the streets where the rainwater lines are located, (2,000) square meters, and paving streets over an area of (5,300) square meters, in addition to rehabilitating the fence of Al-Amal neighborhood's pool basin, (1,450) meters long.
