As part of the emergency preparedness program for water and sanitation facilities, funded by the International Committee of the Red Cross, designed and supervised by CMWU, and implemented by Electro Company, CMWU recently completed the second phase of remotely operating and monitoring water wells using SMS technology.
In turn, Eng. Mohammed Sorour, Head of Electrical Systems Maintenance at CMWU, said that the project aims to operate and monitor water facilities located in dangerous, hard-to-reach locations during wars remotely.
Eng. Sorour noted that the project included two phases, with the first phase covering the operation of 10 wells at a total cost estimated at 600,000 shekels — 3 wells in Beit Hanoun and one well each in Beit Lahia, Jabalia, Al-Bureij, Deir al-Balah, Al-Maghazi, Khan Younis, and Rafah — and the second phase covering the operation of 8 wells at a total cost estimated at 625,000 shekels, in each of Beit Lahia, Jabalia, Al-Maghazi, Nuseirat, Al-Qarara, Al-Nasr, and Rafah.
Eng. Sorour explained that the system used to operate the wells relies on remote operation (automation), which means operating the facility and controlling all its parts automatically without means of communication, while the other system, the SCADA system, is controlling the facility through a remote communication means, with the technology used in this project being SMS messages via mobile phones.
