The second phase of the advanced wastewater treatment plant for agricultural use, funded by the European Union and implemented by Oxfam in cooperation with Agricultural Relief and the Palestinian Environmental Friends Association, was recently opened in Rafah city, south of the Gaza Strip.
The opening ceremony was attended by Oxfam's Director in the Gaza Strip Mr. Shane, European Union representative Mr. Ayman Fathiya, CMWU's Director-General Eng. Monther Shoblaq, Dr. Nabil Abu Shamala from the Ministry of Agriculture, Mr. Ibrahim Dargham representing the farmers, Mr. Tayseer Muhaisen from Agricultural Relief, and Dr. Samir Al-Afifi from the Palestinian Environmental Friends Association, with each of them giving a speech during the ceremony.
In his speech, Eng. Monther Shoblaq said that implementing the second phase of the wastewater treatment plant serves the interests of hundreds of farmers in Rafah's Al-Mawasi area, which includes thousands of dunums that will benefit from 2,400 cubic meters of treated water with better environmental quality than the first phase.
Eng. Shoblaq noted that international standards for the use of sewage water were observed, whether in treatment or the quality of the treated water, with the pollutant reduction rate reaching more than 80%, with the BOD level reaching less than 30 mg/liter, making this water very suitable for use in the agricultural sector, with the caveat that it should not be used on fruit-bearing crops such as dates, guava, olives, and the like.
At the conclusion of the ceremony, which included dabke folk dance performances, the attendees participated in unveiling the project's plaque, followed by a cross-country race for dozens of young men from inside the plant towards the flow of the alternative water to the farmers' land in Rafah, along a large pipe transporting the water for several kilometers.
