CMWU, in cooperation with UNICEF, the International Committee of the Red Cross, and Jabalia al-Nazla Municipality, carried out emergency field works to address the sanitation problem and reduce the health hazard in the Al-Karama area north of Gaza City, as part of the urgent response to improve the environmental and health conditions in the area, following a comprehensive field inspection of the sanitation and rainwater networks.
The works targeted the area extending from the Karama junction to Al-Rasheed Street westward, including residential neighborhoods and shelter camps, where the inspection work revealed faults and damage in the sanitation and rainwater networks that led to the flow of sewage and worsened the health hazard, directly affecting the lives of citizens and displaced persons and posing a real threat to public health and the environment.
The emergency intervention works continued for 14 working days, and included inspecting the sanitation and rainwater networks, addressing partial damage, and maintaining and desludging (43) manholes, in addition to carrying out maintenance and repair works on a total of (75) linear meters of sanitation and rainwater networks in several locations, which contributed to restoring the efficiency of the networks, reducing the flow of sewage, and easing the health hazard that had significantly affected the residents of the area and the shelter centers.
UNICEF provided the main support for implementing this intervention, by providing heavy machinery and labor, while the International Committee of the Red Cross contributed to supporting the desludging and maintenance of manholes, which enhanced the speed of response and the efficiency of implementing the field works.
This intervention comes amid the exceptional humanitarian and operational conditions facing the Gaza Strip, and the accompanying acute shortage of materials, spare parts, and equipment needed to operate and maintain sanitation facilities, which poses significant challenges to CMWU's efforts and underscores the importance of continued partner support to ensure the sustainability of essential services, protect public health, preserve the environment, and ease the suffering of citizens.
