A delegation from UNICEF visited the site of the rainwater project construction in Al-Wafaa area in Khan Younis city, south of the Gaza Strip, aiming to review the progress of the project, with the delegation including Mr. Mark Henderson, Eng. Eman Aqel, Eng. Zeidan Abu Zuhri, and Eng. Ali Sobh, and they were received by the Director of the Projects Supervision Department at CMWU Eng. Robin Al-Madhloum, the representative of the project's implementing company "Abna Shanan Contracting" Eng. Tamer Shanan, and the representative of the project's consulting office.

CMWU, in cooperation with Khan Younis Municipality and in coordination with the Palestinian Water Authority, continues work on the rainwater drainage project in Al-Wafaa area in Khan Younis, generously funded by the State of Kuwait through UNICEF at a cost of (1.5) million dollars.

This project aims to end residents' decades-long suffering, particularly as the area is considered one of the lowest-lying areas in Khan Younis, with rainwater arriving to it from all parts of the governorate, with this project including constructing a concrete culvert at varying depths to reach the engineering gradients needed to ensure the smooth drainage of water from the aforementioned area, reaching the main collection pool located north of Al-Amal neighborhood, as well as paving the area's streets and side roads.

The rainwater drainage line will also be connected to the existing network, reaching directly to the main collection pool north of Al-Amal neighborhood, in addition to rehabilitating the basin and constructing surrounding fences to protect residents from the risks of falling into it, with this project putting in place a radical solution to the problem of rainwater flooding for the area's residents during the winter season and making the most of rainwater by filtering it into the groundwater aquifer.

This leads to strengthening the groundwater aquifer, by injecting half a million cubic meters of rainwater annually, achieving benefit from rainwater and protecting residents and their property from the risks of rainwater flooding.
