The Coastal Municipalities Water Utility received a UN delegation led by Dr. Ramiz Alakbarov at the Sheikh Ejleen wastewater treatment plant to assess the damage and urgent needs for its rehabilitation.
UN Delegation Reviews Wastewater System in Gaza City and Operational Needs of Sheikh Ejleen Plant
The Coastal Municipalities Water Utility (CMWU), Gaza Municipality, and the Palestinian Water Authority received Dr. Ramiz Alakbarov, Deputy Special Coordinator for the Middle East Peace Process and UN Humanitarian Coordinator, along with his accompanying delegation, during his visit to the Gaza Strip to review the humanitarian situation and the conditions facing vital sectors, foremost among them water and sanitation.
The reception was held at the Sheikh Ejleen wastewater treatment plant south of Gaza City, in the presence of representatives from UNICEF and the WASH Cluster, where the delegation was briefed on the general state of the sanitation system in Gaza City, including sewage collection and pumping networks, and the challenges facing their operation given the damage sustained by the infrastructure.
The delegation was also briefed on the Sheikh Ejleen wastewater treatment plant, the works and interventions required for its rehabilitation and operation, along with the most urgent needs for equipment, spare parts, and materials required to restore sanitation services and reduce health and environmental risks.
