Laying the Foundation Stone for the Expansion Project of the Seawater Desalination Plant North of the Gaza Strip

CMWU participated in the foundation-laying ceremony for the expansion project of the seawater desalination plant north of the Gaza Strip, supported by the Kuwait Fund for Development through the Islamic Development Bank, implemented by the Arab International Organization for the Reconstruction of Palestine, and supervised by the Water Authority, aiming to raise the desalination plant's capacity and thereby increase the number of beneficiaries of desalinated water.
The project contributes to achieving further development in the field of water production from non-conventional sources, and strengthens the efforts made in developing the Palestinian water sector and facing its challenges.
This took place under the patronage and in the presence of His Excellency the Chairman of the Palestinian Water Authority Eng. Mazen Ghunaim, with the participation of CMWU's Executive Director Eng. Monther Shoblaq, Gaza Municipality's Mayor Dr. Yahya Al-Sarraj, Beit Lahia Municipality's Mayor Eng. Alaa Al-Attar, the Director of the Arab Organization for the Reconstruction of Palestine's office Dr. Osama Al-Issawi, Gaza Governor Mr. Ibrahim Abu Al-Naja, CMWU's Deputy Executive Director Eng. Omar Shatat, and a number of representatives of international organizations and local bodies.
In turn, Eng. Mazen Ghunaim explained that the investment in the North Gaza desalination plant, including the new phase, exceeded $17.5 million, bringing its production capacity to 12,500 cubic meters per day and serving more than 400,000 residents, as this expansion comes as part of the water sector's structural plan, which aims to provide drinking water reaching various residential communities in the Strip, fairly and in a balanced manner, and contributes to encouraging the other sectors to move in the field of development and construction.
In his speech, Eng. Monther Shoblaq welcomed the Chairman of the Water Authority and the honorable attendees, praising the great role of the Water Authority, the Palestinian government, and donor organizations in supporting water and sanitation projects in the Gaza Strip, which has prevented the deterioration of conditions in the Gaza Strip over the past years, as small-scale seawater desalination plant construction projects have contributed to providing drinking water and a safe healthy environment and easing the suffering of residents in the Gaza Strip, the latest of which was the expansion of the seawater desalination plant south of Deir al-Balah, in addition to numerous sanitation projects, the latest of which was the completion of the sanitation project opened yesterday in Al-Suwaidiya village, Rafah governorate.
In turn, Gaza Governor Mr. Ibrahim Abu Al-Naja praised the efforts made by the Water Authority and CMWU to develop infrastructure, particularly seawater desalination projects given their great importance in improving the service provided to residents, particularly amid these conditions.
