CMWU's Chairman of the Board of Directors Dr. Majed Awni Abu Ramadan received His Excellency the Chairman of the Water Authority Eng. Mazen Ghunaim and his accompanying delegation, at CMWU's main headquarters in Al-Zahra city, central Gaza Strip, in the presence of CMWU's Executive Director Eng. Monther Shoblaq, his Deputy for Operations and Maintenance Affairs Eng. Omar Shatat, Eng. Maher Al-Najjar, KfW Projects Department Director, Mr. Mamdouh Al-Ghazali, Deputy Executive Director for Administrative and Financial Affairs, and Eng. Yasmine Bashir, Head of the Projects Coordination Department.
During the meeting, Dr. Majed Awni Abu Ramadan welcomed His Excellency the Chairman of the Water Authority and his accompanying delegation, praising the Water Authority's efforts aimed at developing the water and sanitation sector in the Gaza Strip, and also praising the important projects whose opening and foundation-laying took place over the past few days in various parts of the Gaza Strip, particularly the expansion project of the seawater desalination plant south of Deir al-Balah and the Northern desalination plant, expressing his sincere thanks to Minister Ghunaim, for his support of CMWU, enabling it to improve its performance and the services it provides to the residents of the Gaza Strip.
In turn, the Chairman of the Water Authority Eng. Mazen Ghunaim affirmed the importance of cooperation with CMWU in order to develop the water and sanitation sector in the Gaza Strip and improve the level of services, with this cooperation resulting in the completion of numerous projects that contributed to improving water and sanitation services for the residents of the Gaza Strip.
The two sides discussed during the meeting numerous topics related to the importance of continuing to support the institutional development of the water sector as one of the most important pillars of the sustainability of water and sanitation services, and enabling service providers in the Gaza Strip, most importantly CMWU, to cover the operating expenses of water and sanitation facilities. In this context, the importance of beginning the procedures to transform CMWU into a regional water utility in the Gaza Strip in accordance with the 2014 Water Law was affirmed, in line with the roadmap developed by the Palestinian Water Authority in coordination and cooperation with CMWU, the municipalities of the Gaza Strip, and the Ministry of Local Government, which aims at the gradual transfer of water and sanitation administrations from the municipalities to the regional water utility, in addition to discussing the importance of completing the procedures to activate the role of the Water Authority's bulk water sales unit.
