Receiving an EU delegation at the seawater desalination plant south of Gaza to review the plant's expansion project to raise its capacity to 20,000 m3 daily.
CMWU received an EU delegation represented by the Director-General for the Neighbourhood Policy at the European Union, Ms. Cinzia Tarletti, and her accompanying delegation, and representatives from UNICEF, at the seawater desalination plant south of the Gaza Strip, where they were received by CMWU's Executive Director Eng. Monther Shoblaq, his Deputy for Technical Affairs Eng. Omar Shatat, Eng. Saadi Ali, Director-General of the Projects Unit at the Palestinian Water Authority, and representatives from the EU office in the Gaza Strip.
This visit aims to review the projects being implemented, funded by the European Union, foremost among them the project to expand the Southern desalination plant.
In his welcoming remarks, Eng. Monther Shoblaq affirmed the importance of the desalination plant expansion project in order to reach the greatest possible number of residents of the targeted areas in the southern governorates of the Gaza Strip with high-quality water, which leads to improving the health and environmental situation in those areas, noting the importance of the European Union's continued support for water sector projects in order to improve the living conditions of the residents of the Gaza Strip.
Eng. Omar Shatat gave a brief explanation of the desalination plant's operating mechanism and the plant's expansion project to increase its production to 20,000 cubic meters daily.
It is worth noting that the seawater desalination plant south of the Gaza Strip is one of the most important strategic projects that effectively contributes to easing the water crisis in the Gaza Strip, as this plant has served, since the opening of its first phase, about 75,000 residents of some western areas in Rafah and Khan Younis governorates, and work is underway to expand it to become capable of serving wide areas of Khan Younis and Rafah governorates, funded by the European Union through UNICEF, in cooperation with CMWU and the Palestinian Water Authority.
