CMWU Participates in the Foundation Stone-Laying Ceremony for the Water Distribution Network Restructuring Project South of the Gaza Strip

CMWU's Board Chairman Dr. Majed Abu Ramadan participated in the foundation stone-laying ceremony for the project to restructure the water distribution networks in the south of the Gaza Strip, implemented by the Water Authority in cooperation with local and international bodies, as part of the works accompanying the central desalination plant, with support from the World Bank and the Donors' Fund for Infrastructure Development, in a ceremony organized by the Palestinian Water Authority at the Al-Isra water reservoir west of Khan Younis, south of the Gaza Strip, under the patronage of His Excellency Water Authority Chairman Eng. Mazen Ghanem and in the presence of CMWU's Executive Director Eng. Monther Shoblaq, Deputy Mayor of Khan Younis Dr. Mazen Al-Sheikh, Rafah Governor Mr. Ahmed Nasr, Khan Younis Governor Dr. Ahmed Al-Shaibi, and the mayors of eastern Khan Younis, with the project's cost reaching $23 million, serving about 700,000 residents.
This project comes within the first phase of a package of projects worth about $117 million, including rehabilitating 16 water reservoirs and 52 wells and restructuring the existing water distribution network system and connecting it to the "SCADA" control system.
In his remarks, Dr. Majed Abu Ramadan praised the efforts of the Water Authority, the Palestinian government, and all local and international partners to improve water services, through establishing strategic water projects during the past years, the most prominent of which were the seawater desalination plants extending along the coastal strip, pointing out that these plants contributed to easing the burden on the groundwater aquifer and improving the service provided to residents of the targeted areas.
He thanked all the partners and donor bodies for water and sanitation projects in the Gaza Strip, which have left an impact on people's lives through projects that have touched their lives, and contributed to improving water and sanitation services over the past years.
For his part, Eng. Mazen Ghanem affirmed that the risk of an environmental catastrophe and water crisis in the Gaza Strip has been gradually overcome, to move to the scope of development and sustainability through implementing strategic water projects.
Eng. Ghanem pointed out that the Gaza Strip has witnessed, in recent years, an acceleration in the volume of implementation of programs and projects in the water and sanitation sector, with the volume of investment in it reaching more than $750 million, while plans are underway to implement expansion and development projects during the coming years, raising that amount to more than $1 billion with the implementation of the central desalination plant.
