CMWU, the Palestinian Water Authority, and UNICEF received a delegation of EU ambassadors visiting the Gaza Strip, during their visit to the seawater desalination plant south of the Gaza Strip, aiming to review the progress of work on the Phase Two and Three project of the desalination plant's expansion and follow up on its development works, with the delegation including the EU Representative to Palestine Mr. Sven Kühn von Burgsdorff and a number of EU member states' ambassadors.
The delegation was received by CMWU's Director-General Eng. Monther Shoblaq, his Deputy for Technical Affairs Eng. Omar Shatat, a number of department directors, and representatives of the Palestinian Water Authority Eng. Saadi Ali and Eng. Marwan Al-Bardawil.
In his welcoming remarks, Eng. Monther Shoblaq affirmed to the EU delegation the importance of the desalination plant expansion project in order to reach the greatest possible number of residents of the targeted areas in the southern governorates of the Gaza Strip with high-quality water, thereby improving the health and environmental situation in those areas, and looking forward to the European Union's continued support for water sector projects in order to improve the living conditions of the residents of the Gaza Strip.
It is worth noting that the seawater desalination plant south of the Gaza Strip is one of the most important strategic projects that effectively contributes to easing the water crisis in the Gaza Strip, as this plant has served, since the opening of its first phase, about 75,000 residents of some western areas in Rafah and Khan Younis governorates, and work is underway to expand it to reach a production capacity of 20,000 cubic meters/day, to become capable of serving wide areas of Khan Younis and Rafah governorates, funded by the European Union through UNICEF, in cooperation with CMWU and the Palestinian Water Authority.
