CMWU participated in the opening activities of the seawater desalination plant project north of the Gaza Strip, which will serve 250,000 people in the areas most in need of water in Gaza city, with the plant producing 10,000 cubic meters daily, at a cost of $15 million supported by the Kuwait Fund through the Islamic Development Bank, in the presence of the Chairman of the Water Authority Eng. Mazen Ghunaim, and the ceremony was attended by CMWU's Chairman of the Board of Directors Dr. Majed Abu Ramadan, CMWU's Director-General Eng. Monther Shoblaq, Gaza Governor Mr. Ibrahim Abu Al-Naja, the Islamic Development Bank's Consultant Eng. Rifat Diab, Gaza Municipality's Mayor Dr. Yahya Al-Sarraj, Beit Lahia Municipality's Mayor Eng. Alaa Al-Attar, Beit Hanoun Municipality's Mayor Dr. Emad Adwan, Umm Al-Nasr Municipality's Mayor Dr. Musa Abu Haidar, and representatives of official and local organizations and bodies.
In his speech, Dr. Majed Abu Ramadan welcomed the Chairman of the Water Authority and the honorable attendees, praising the great role of the Water Authority and the Palestinian government in supporting water and sanitation projects in the Gaza Strip, which has prevented the deterioration of conditions in the Gaza Strip over the past years, as those projects have contributed to providing a healthy environment and water fit for human use for the residents of the Gaza Strip.
In his speech, Eng. Mazen Ghunaim affirmed that constructing this important water facility had, for many years, been a strategic requirement to supply residents with water amid the suffocating water crisis the Gaza Strip is going through, particularly the targeted areas, praising the role of the implementing and funding bodies in reaching its opening today.
He said that the past five years witnessed great achievements at the level of the water and sanitation sector in Gaza, as 3 limited-capacity desalination plants were completed, with expansion works currently underway at one of them, the Southern desalination plant, to reach a capacity of 20,000 cubic meters daily.
In turn, Gaza Governor Mr. Ibrahim Abu Al-Naja praised the efforts made by the Water Authority and CMWU to develop infrastructure, and expressed President Mahmoud Abbas's direct interest in completing these programs and projects that the residents of the Gaza Strip will benefit from now and in the future, stressing his support for them until achieving their desired goals in the near and long term, so that all the Strip's residents feel their impact.
