CMWU Distributes 90 Cubic Meters of Chlorine Monthly to Drinking Water Wells in the Gaza Strip
Since its establishment, CMWU has taken upon itself the responsibility of disinfecting the water produced by about 230 water wells belonging to CMWU and all the municipalities in the various governorates of the Gaza Strip, in addition to desalination plants, and CMWU distributes about 90 cubic meters monthly of chlorine (sodium hypochlorite) used to disinfect water from bacteriological pollutants in the summer, while the quantity decreases in winter to 75 cubic meters due to the decrease in the water consumption rate in winter compared to summer.
Water disinfection using sodium hypochlorite is considered one of the best methods used to disinfect water and the safest compared to other methods.
CMWU works to secure the necessary quantities of chlorine to suffice for about three or four months, in anticipation of the difficulty of obtaining it in time as a result of the repeated closure of crossings, and given the importance of disinfecting water before pumping it to ensure the safety of residents.
The funding bodies cooperate greatly in providing and bringing in the necessary quantities of chlorine into the Gaza Strip, considering this matter to fall within humanitarian issues and to reduce the occurrence of health disasters.
In this context, with funding from the World Bank, CMWU has been able, since the beginning of the year, to secure quantities of disinfecting chlorine sufficient until July.
It is worth noting that during 2015, the necessary quantities of chlorine were obtained through UNICEF and Islamic Relief.
CMWU works through specialized technical crews and within a specific program to follow up on the distribution of chlorine quantities, whereby the safety of the injection pumps at the wells is first verified and the chlorine's conformity to specifications, and then it is distributed periodically to the wells or as needed in case of an emergency. The efficiency of the disinfection system within the water networks is also followed up by conducting weekly tests of water samples from various points distributed across the networks, and any defect in the system is followed up and worked on to be fixed based on the results of the tests conducted inside CMWU's central laboratory.
On another note, CMWU provides all the devices, equipment, and spare parts necessary to ensure the safety of the disinfection and chlorination system at the wells it supplies with chlorine in all governorates of the Strip.
