CMWU Signs a €9 Million Agreement with the German Development Bank

CMWU signed an agreement with the German Development Bank worth €9 million, under the patronage of the Ministry of Planning and the Palestinian Water Authority.
This agreement comes as emergency funding provided by the German government to rehabilitate and reconstruct water and sanitation facilities destroyed or damaged due to the last Israeli attacks on the Gaza Strip, which caused severe damage to the water and sanitation sector, with CMWU to begin implementing some works to rehabilitate and construct water and sanitation facilities that were destroyed or damaged, through the budget of the Gaza Central Emergency Sewage project (KfW), funded by the German government.
The agreement was signed on the Palestinian side by Minister of Planning and Minister of Finance Dr. Shukri Bishara and Dr. Majed Awni Abu Ramadan, Chairman of CMWU's Board of Directors, in the presence of Eng. Mazen Ghanem, Chairman of the Palestinian Water Authority, Eng. Monther Shoblaq, CMWU's Director-General, and Eng. Fareed Ashour, Director of the Gaza Central Sewage Project Management Unit.
On the German side, the agreement was signed by the German Development Bank (KfW), headed by Mr. Thomas Eisenbach, in the presence of Ms. Bettina Clarissman, Head of the German Representative Office in Palestine.
The agreement includes supporting projects to reconstruct a group of damaged and destroyed facilities, such as the treatment plant and sewage pumps, and reconstructing water reservoirs that were destroyed, such as Al-Muntar reservoir in Gaza city, and a number of wells, and rehabilitating destroyed water and sanitation networks.
The agreement also includes supporting and supplying CMWU with equipment and spare parts for carrying out urgent repairs and providing quantities of diesel to operate sensitive facilities and providing chlorine and some chemical materials necessary for disinfecting and treating drinking water.
Earlier, the German government considered the water and sanitation sector one of the most important sectors that must be immediately supported for rehabilitation, given the vital importance of this sector and the services it provides, which cannot be dispensed with for the residents of the Gaza Strip, despite the severe and serious damage sustained by all sectors, infrastructure, and all aspects of life.
It is noted that Ms. Bettina Clarissman, during an inspection visit after the aggression on the Gaza Strip, had expressed her commitment to helping Palestinians reconstruct infrastructure, after seeing, during the visit, the scale of destruction sustained by infrastructure and CMWU's interventions to urgently rehabilitate some water and sanitation facilities.
