CMWU Reveals the Reason for the Excavations in Gaza's Streets and Affirms the Importance of Rehabilitation Projects

Eng. Maher Al-Najjar, Deputy Director-General of CMWU, revealed several works and projects being implemented in Gaza city with the aim of improving the water and sanitation services provided to residents, in cooperation with Gaza Municipality, and pointed out in his remarks that a water reservoir construction project with a capacity of 5,000 cubic meters is being implemented near the Sheikh Radwan cemetery, which will receive desalinated water from the plant planned to be built west of Gaza city with a production capacity of 10 thousand cubic meters daily, with the project's value reaching $15 million, funded by the Kuwait Fund for Arab Economic Development, managed by the Islamic Development Bank, and Al-Najjar affirmed the importance of this project, which will improve the quality of water provided to residents and contribute to solving the worsening water crisis, and Al-Najjar also pointed to projects for laying and rehabilitating water lines inside Gaza city to raise their capacity to accommodate the quantities of water from the desalination plant and the Mekorot water line.
Eng. Fareed Ashour, Director of the Central Sewage Project Management Unit, affirmed that 12 projects are being implemented with generous funding from the German government and the German Development Bank in Gaza city to rehabilitate and construct water and sanitation facilities that were destroyed or damaged during the 2014 aggression, at a total value of about €8 million.
These projects include rehabilitating and laying water lines to receive the new water from the desalination plant and the Mekorot line, as well as rehabilitating sewage lines in Gaza city and constructing and rehabilitating a group of wells that were destroyed during the last aggression, six wells, and rebuilding Al-Muntar reservoir east of Gaza with a capacity of 5,000 cubic meters and the Civil Defense reservoir with a capacity of 3,000 cubic meters along with the main connection lines and the reservoir's booster pump.
Eng. Fareed Ashour affirmed that the projects implemented by CMWU within the Gaza reconstruction program come as an intervention to repair the damage sustained by water and sanitation facilities, especially after the last war on the Gaza Strip, which included repairing water and sanitation networks in the east of Gaza area and inside the city, as well as constructing projects to improve the water and sanitation services provided in the city.
Ashour added that CMWU has repaired and laid about 30 thousand meters of water networks ranging in diameter from 63 to 315 millimeters, at a total value of €660,000.
Regarding sewage networks, Ashour explained that intervention is underway to repair the main sewage networks that were affected during the war on Gaza city, at a total value of €730,000.
