CMWU Completes the Rainwater Drainage Line Project in Obeida Street, Rafah Area

CMWU has completed the rainwater drainage line project in Obeida Street in the Tal Al-Sultan area in Rafah city, funded by the Islamic Development Bank at $237,000, with the number of beneficiaries of this project estimated at about 30 thousand residents.
In addition to the rainwater drainage line, the excavation of part of a rainwater filtration basin near the Egyptian border was completed, in order to ensure the operation of the Obeida rainwater line during the current winter season and absorb the quantities of water coming from it.
This project primarily aims to protect residents in that area from the risk of rainwater flooding that collects at the Obeida roundabout due to the low elevation of the street when heavy rain falls, by pumping the collected rainwater to the filtration basin near the Egyptian border. It is noted that rainwater flooding in the Obeida roundabout area in previous years led to some homes being flooded and traffic movement and residents' travel being disrupted.
The project also aims to maximize the benefit from rainwater by filtering it into the groundwater aquifer, which contributes to easing the severity of the water crisis.
The rainwater drainage line, extending from the Obeida roundabout to the filtration basin near the Egyptian border, is 800 meters long with a diameter of 1 meter and covers an area of 2 square kilometers.
It is worth noting that the filtration basin will be shaped, excavated, and finally prepared to filter rainwater, funded by the United States Agency for International Development through UNICEF, with the project's preliminary design being prepared and the tender for this project expected to be issued at the beginning of 2016, with the project also including constructing a rainwater collection culvert from the Al-Najili roundabout to the filtration basin, 1,300 meters long, with the number of beneficiaries estimated at 100 thousand residents.
