CMWU in Rafah Completes a Project to Maintain and Install Water and Sanitation Networks.
Rafah - As part of CMWU's efforts to rehabilitate water and sanitation facilities in Rafah governorate, in cooperation with partner and donor institutions, CMWU, funded by UNICEF, continues implementing several repair and maintenance projects for old, worn-out water and sanitation networks in various areas of the southern Gaza Strip's governorates, particularly Rafah and Khan Younis cities.
The maintenance project aims to rehabilitate and develop those water and sanitation networks and work to improve the water supplies provided to residents in the targeted areas, with the networks' efficiency expected to increase significantly.
In Tal Al-Sultan area west of Rafah, CMWU is currently completing water network extensions with an 8-inch diameter instead of the old 6-inch, with the entire water transmission network to be renewed, as the network is old and worn-out and has caused a health hazard for residents throughout the past period, with the old network's age exceeding 30 years.
The project also includes repairing sewage networks in the same area, through which sanitation services will be improved for residents living around Canada water reservoir.
It is worth noting that CMWU in Rafah, south of the Strip, has, during the past period, implemented several maintenance and installation works at a value of $200,000 for multiple facilities, including maintaining sewage networks in Rafah city in Tal Al-Sultan, Al-Jineina, Taha Hussein Street, Al-Siyamat area, and other areas of the governorate.
Eng. Firas Abu Nqira, Director of the Utility's regional headquarters in Rafah, also affirmed the importance of network maintenance projects, affirming the Utility's keenness in Rafah to complete this project soon, so that it becomes a qualitative shift in the water and sanitation services provided to residents in Rafah, praising the role of the institutions supporting these projects, particularly UNICEF, which is funding the maintenance project in Tal Al-Sultan area.
