CMWU's Director-General Eng. Monther Shoblaq stated that CMWU began drying the second and third basins of the temporary treatment plant in Wadi Gaza, which are considered a main source of foul odors and mosquito breeding areas, which would contribute to a qualitative improvement in the environment surrounding the residents of Wadi Gaza area, particularly Abu Middain area.
Eng. Shoblaq noted that CMWU and the Central Governorate's municipalities decided to dry two of the three basins at the temporary treatment plant in Wadi Gaza as a temporary measure due to the increase in complaints from residents living in those areas and to ease the extent of the suffering and health hazards resulting from the emission of foul odors and the spread of mosquitoes, particularly in the summer season.
Eng. Shoblaq noted that the temporary Wadi Gaza treatment plant was constructed at the time as a temporary solution to collect sewage water in the wadi area to lift the health hazard from the residents of Wadi Gaza, until the completion of the Central treatment plant east of Al-Bureij and the beginning of its operation and the diversion of all the sewage of the Central Governorate and Gaza city towards east of Al-Bureij to treat it with high efficiency and return clean water to Wadi Gaza that would restore natural life to Wadi Gaza, but as a result of the circumstances of the siege imposed on the Gaza Strip, the completion of this project was delayed.
Shoblaq noted that the Central treatment plant was supposed to begin operation, but due to the circumstances of the spread of the coronavirus pandemic, CMWU was unable to receive the foreign expertise that was supposed to come to begin the plant's trial operation and hand it over to CMWU, expecting that the Central treatment plant east of Al-Bureij would begin operation in the middle of this summer.
