CMWU, with funding from the International Committee of the Red Cross, carried out repair works for streets and road entrances leading to water and sanitation facilities in Khan Younis, after the heavy rainfall in recent days caused cracks in the asphalt layer of some streets and soil erosion in other streets, and to carry out these works the Utility provided 30 truckloads of sand and silt and a number of machinery necessary to carry out road repair and adjustment works.
Repair works were carried out for damaged roads in several streets in Abu Rashwan, Qizan Al-Najjar, and the eastern and western row neighborhoods, and sand berms were placed and the course of Wadi Abu Jmeiza with Wadi Al-Sikka was rearranged, and the fence of the Khan Younis College Training Center and UNRWA's main warehouses was reinforced as an emergency measure to protect them from collapse, and on another note, the coastal road between Rafah and Khan Younis governorates was reinforced to prevent soil erosion and collapses.
In the same context, cleaning works were carried out for the two main pumping stations (Hisbet Al-Samak and Al-Wafa'a) and other subsidiary stations, with cleaning works and monitoring of pump operation still ongoing to ensure the water level does not rise and to prevent any damage that may result from that.
The Utility also installed an additional pump at Al-Amal pond with a capacity of 500 cubic meters/hour, and it is noted that the expansion works carried out at Al-Amal pond last year contributed greatly and effectively to easing the impact of heavy rainwater and protecting residents living near the pond from the risk of water flooding.
