Islamic Relief supplied CMWU with 250 cubic meters of chlorine used to disinfect drinking water for three months, with emergency funding of $200,000.
Eng. Mahmoud Al-Hamas, Head of the Disinfection and Desalination Section at CMWU, said that the Utility needs 90 cubic meters of chlorine (sodium hypochlorite) monthly, with all wells injected with this material to obtain disinfected water free of microbes, with quantities of chlorine pumped according to the well's production quantity.
Al-Hamas explained that the water consumption rate decreases in winter due to lower consumption compared to summer, and added that the disinfection process begins with testing the concentration of the chlorine material at a rate of 10%, which is injected into the wells so its effect remains for a long period.
It is noted that CMWU takes upon itself the responsibility of distributing chlorine and water disinfectants to all water wells belonging to all municipalities of the Gaza Strip, to ensure the safety of the water reaching residents and out of concern for and preservation of their health.
