Laying the foundation stone of the Al-Bureij central sewage treatment plant with a German grant of €86.6 million through KfW, serving about a million residents in Gaza and the middle area.
Providing a Grant of €86.6 Million to Develop Sewage Water Treatment for Gaza City and the Middle Area, from the Federal Republic of Germany and through the German Development Bank, in Partnership with the Palestinian Water Authority and Implemented by CMWU
Under the patronage of His Excellency Prime Minister Dr. Rami Hamdallah, and in the presence of His Excellency the German Federal Minister for Economic Cooperation and Development Dr. Gerd Müller, His Excellency the Minister of Public Works and Housing Dr. Mofid Al-Hasayna, His Excellency the Chairman of CMWU's Board of Directors Dr. Majed Awni Abu Ramadan, and His Excellency the Director of the German Development Bank in Ramallah Mr. Jonas Blume, the foundation stone was laid for the Al-Bureij central sewage treatment plant, on December 1, 2016.
With the laying of the foundation stone, the beginning of construction work on the Al-Bureij central sewage treatment plant is announced, which is of great importance for developing sewage management in the middle of the Gaza Strip. This plant, which will accommodate 60,000 cubic meters daily of sewage water, is part of the general sewage water treatment system funded by the Federal Republic of Germany through the German Development Bank (KfW) via the Gaza Central Wastewater project.
This project will include constructing the central pumping station in Wadi Gaza and the pressure and gravity lines to collect sewage water from Gaza city and the middle governorate, and constructing solar cells with a capacity of 2 megawatts to power the central treatment plant, noting that part of this funding was used to develop the existing Sheikh Ajleen treatment plant in Gaza city.
These two plants will treat 120,000 cubic meters per day of sewage water in the first phase to serve nearly a million residents in Gaza city and the middle area.
The Gaza Central Wastewater project, valued at €86.6 million, is one of three projects funded by the German government for the benefit of CMWU in partnership with the Palestinian Water Authority.
The Federal Republic of Germany, through the German Development Bank, provided €9 million to rebuild and rehabilitate the water and sanitation infrastructure after the 2014 war, and provided €10 million for the integrated sewage management program and improving the efficiency of resource management in the Gaza Strip, which is in the planning stage. Thus, the Federal Republic of Germany is one of the largest contributors in supporting CMWU's efforts to develop and sustain water and sanitation services, with a total amount reaching €105.6 million.
