CMWU's Board of Directors Discusses the Operating Needs of the Desalination Plants

As part of the periodic meetings held by CMWU's Board of Directors, the Board held an emergency meeting to discuss the needs for operating the three seawater desalination plants, amid the lack of funding sources to provide the chemicals needed to operate the seawater desalination plants on one hand, and the increased consumption of water by residents in the summer season on the other, with CMWU having tried, for about two months, to communicate with some donor bodies through the Water Authority to fund those materials, at a time when CMWU and the municipalities benefiting from the desalination plants are suffering from a severe decline in the bill collection rate to a level that makes it difficult to fund the purchase of operating elements for these plants, foremost among them chemicals, noting that until this moment, the funding needed to operate those plants has not been secured.
In turn, the Chairman and members of CMWU's Board of Directors affirmed their exertion of every effort to secure the budget needed to cover the basic requirements for operating the desalination plants in terms of chemicals, the operating team, and spare parts, in order to continue delivering water suitable for household use to residents of the targeted areas, which have witnessed a noticeable improvement in water quality during the past months, in addition to the necessity of raising residents' awareness of the importance of their commitment to paying their water bills, which leads to ensuring the continuity of the service and water reaching residents of the targeted areas at this stage, and working to expand the circle of beneficiary areas during the coming period.
It is worth noting that since the operation of the seawater desalination plants recently constructed in Gaza, Central, and Khan Younis governorates, an improvement has been recorded in the quality of water provided to residents of the areas served by those plants.
