CMWU received the Humanitarian Coordinator for the Occupied Palestinian Territory Ms. Lynn Hastings, at the seawater desalination plant south of the Gaza Strip, aiming to review the progress of the plant's expansion project, to become capable of serving a greater number of residents of Rafah and Khan Younis cities.
She was received by CMWU's Director-General Eng. Monther Shoblaq, his Deputy for Planning and Projects Affairs Eng. Maher Al-Najjar, his Deputy for Technical Affairs Eng. Omar Shatat, Eng. Zeidan Abu Zuhri, Eng. Ali Sobh, and Eng. Yasser Nassar, representatives of UNICEF, and Eng. Tawfiq Hamad from the Palestinian Water Authority.
During the visit, Ms. Lynn Hastings was briefed on the reality of the water services sector in the Gaza Strip and its challenges, and the strategic projects that have been constructed and begun operating, particularly the seawater desalination plants that have contributed to improving the water service for the Strip's residents, in addition to the sewage treatment plants that work to safely dispose of sewage water.
In turn, Eng. Monther Shoblaq welcomed the Humanitarian Coordinator for the Occupied Palestinian Territory, affirming the importance of the seawater desalination plant in improving the water service for the residents of Rafah and Khan Younis cities, noting that work is currently underway to expand it to become capable of serving 250,000 residents of the aforementioned areas, and also noting the efforts made by CMWU and the Water Authority in partnership with numerous international organizations, which have led over the past years to a significant improvement in water and sanitation services in the Strip, affirming that residents have actually begun to feel this improvement.
He also affirmed the importance of supporting these efforts in order to preserve these achievements and continue operating these facilities amid the difficulty in securing the operating expenses of those facilities and the need to continue supporting CMWU's development and operational programs, particularly amid the economic situation the Gaza Strip is going through.
