CMWU Begins Implementing the Temporary Solution to the Sheikh Radwan Pond Rainwater Problem
CMWU, in cooperation with Gaza Municipality, has begun working on the temporary solution project for the rainwater collection pond problem in the Sheikh Radwan neighborhood, and earlier, CMWU succeeded in bringing in 1,200 linear meters of high-pressure (HDPE) water hoses with a diameter of 315 mm, in cooperation with the Palestinian Water Authority.
The idea of the temporary solution project is based on establishing a temporary conveyance line through which the rainwater collected in Sheikh Radwan pond in Gaza city is pumped to the sea, 1,700 meters long, by constructing pumps to empty the pond's contents at a capacity of about 2,500 cubic meters per hour.
The Utility is seeking to complete this temporary solution as quickly as possible to avert any risks that may arise from any new weather depression and spare the area and residents any damage that may arise from water overflow, as happened during the past week.
The International Committee of the Red Cross responded to an urgent request submitted by CMWU to fund the project, and the Utility is seeking to complete the project before the problem recurs with any coming weather depression.
It is worth noting that the tunnel street area and the area surrounding the pond were flooded by rainwater that reached a height of meters due to heavy rainfall and the collection pond's inability to absorb the large quantities of water during the past winter season and the weather depression the Gaza Strip experienced last week.
