CMWU Implements Several Interventions at Al-Aqsa University Displaced Persons Shelter Center West of Khan Younis

Amid the difficult conditions our Palestinian people in the Gaza Strip are experiencing as a result of the ongoing war that began on October 7, 2023, which has led to the displacement of large numbers of residents from Gaza, the North, and Central governorates to the southern governorates of the Gaza Strip, and their taking refuge in schools, universities, and various shelter centers, and the establishment of dozens of displacement camps — among these places are the campus, buildings, and grounds of Al-Aqsa University west of Khan Younis, where the number has reached no less than 25,000 people. The university administration approached international relief organizations to have the site recognized as an official shelter center, but without success.

This is due to the near-daily increase in the number of displaced persons, while at the same time the university's infrastructure and capabilities lack the ability to provide water, sanitation, and other services necessary for the humane accommodation of displaced persons.

Therefore, CMWU and its crews took the initiative to supply the university with a water source from a nearby well, in addition to providing the university with additional overhead tanks and installing a generator to supply the well with a power source to operate it amid the electricity outage affecting all areas of the Gaza Strip.

Work is currently underway to provide more water tanks with support from partner international relief organizations, including UNICEF.

In addition, work is underway to supply the university with a sanitation pump in order to drain sewage water and prevent a health hazard due to the increasing quantities of sewage water.
