CMWU Continues Its Efforts to Secure the Maintenance and Operation Needs of Water and Sanitation Facilities

In continuation of its ongoing efforts and the appeals for help it has issued in order to support the maintenance and operation costs of water and sanitation facilities, CMWU recently met at its main headquarters in Al-Zahra city with a delegation from OCHA (the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs).
This meeting aims to inform the delegation of the current reality of water and sanitation services, particularly amid the continuing deterioration of the economic situation due to the siege and the developments that have occurred to these services after the spread of the coronavirus pandemic and the increased decline in bill collection rates at CMWU and the municipalities, which will negatively affect the ability of service providers to continue providing the minimum level of water and sanitation services.
In addition, the meeting addressed the necessity for UN institutions and donor institutions to support CMWU with spare parts, fuel, and disinfection and sanitization materials needed for water and sanitation facilities and their workers, in addition to the necessity of supporting the wages of workers in these sectors in order to ensure the continuation of the service to the fullest extent.
The visiting OCHA delegation showed its strong keenness and interest in supporting and enabling CMWU and the municipalities in order to strengthen their capacity to provide water and sanitation services to the fullest extent, as one of the most important basic humanitarian services, and continuing to search for other funding sources to support the needs of the Utility and the municipalities, which were included in the appeal for help issued by the Utility.
