CMWU Participates in the Opening and Operation Ceremony of Al-Safa Reservoir in Central Gaza City

CMWU's Director-General Eng. Monther Shoblaq participated in the opening and operation ceremony of Al-Safa reservoir in Al-Yarmouk area in central Gaza city, under the patronage and in the presence of Water Authority Minister Eng. Mazen Ghanem, with the ceremony attended by Gaza Governor Ibrahim Abu Al-Naja, Dr. Yahya Al-Sarraj, Mayor of Gaza, Dr. Osama Al-Issawi, Head of the Arab International Organization for the Reconstruction of Palestine's office, and Eng. Ahmed Ayesh, representative of the Islamic Development Bank.
In his speech, Water Authority Minister Eng. Mazen Ghanem said that the construction of Al-Safa reservoir came as part of the Water Authority's strategy to develop water facilities and provide additional safe water sources for household use in the southern governorates and preserve and manage the groundwater aquifer in an appropriate and sustainable manner, at a total cost of $2 million, supported by the Kuwait Fund through the Islamic Development Bank, in coordination with the Water Authority and Gaza Municipality.
Eng. Ghanem noted that the reservoir's storage capacity reaches about 5,000 cubic meters and the number of beneficiaries is 50,000 people, with the reservoir to be used to blend water coming from various sources, foremost among them the water produced from Gaza city's desalination plant, which recently began trial operation, and the surrounding wells, to improve the quantity and quality of water (according to international standards) for the targeted area surrounding the reservoir, with the project also including installing transmission lines 3 km long, with varying diameters ranging from 8 to 10 inches.
In turn, CMWU's Director-General Eng. Monther Shoblaq praised the joint cooperation and coordination between the Water Authority and CMWU in completing numerous water and sanitation projects in the southern governorates, which would strengthen the resilience of our people and provide the best service in these two fields, with Eng. Shoblaq noting that CMWU worked to secure a sustainable energy source covering a portion of Al-Safa reservoir's operational needs by implementing a project to install solar power units with a capacity of 160 kilowatts, funded by UNICEF through the Humanitarian Assistance Fund, with all available spaces at the reservoir and its surroundings utilized to install the panels to the appropriate extent, which ensures operating the reservoir for the greatest possible number of hours and serves the largest possible number of residents.
