CMWU Repairs Main Wastewater Network in Al-Hawlan Area of Jabalia

Published on

CMWU teams, with support from the ICRC and in cooperation with Jabalia Municipality, carried out maintenance and repair works on the main wastewater line in the Al-Hawlan area, on Rasem Halawa Street, west of Al-Huda Mosque. The works aim to address wastewater overflows that have affected several areas of Jabalia for months.

Residents of Jabalia’s Old Market, Halawa Camp, Al-Huda area, and Yafa Street have endured prolonged difficulties due to blockages in the wastewater network, which prevented wastewater from flowing toward Al-Baqara Pumping Station. This led to rising wastewater levels inside manholes, overflows onto streets, and accumulation at several locations, creating health and environmental risks for residents of surrounding neighborhoods and displacement camps.

Over the past several months, technical teams have repeatedly inspected, cleaned, and cleared the wastewater network using jetting and vacuum equipment until they identified the main fault. Investigations revealed broken wastewater pipes and the collapse of a main manhole at a depth of up to seven meters below ground level.

The works included excavating the damaged site, replacing the broken pipes, and installing a new manhole, while implementing the necessary safety measures to protect workers during operations.

These interventions help address the causes of wastewater overflows and improve network efficiency, positively impacting the health and environmental conditions of approximately 20,000 residents in the affected areas. The works form part of CMWU’s ongoing efforts, together with its partners, to protect public health and improve essential services for residents despite field challenges and the severe shortage of available resources and equipment.
