The International Committee of the Red Cross Conducts a Field Tour of Some of CMWU's Facilities and Projects.
Gaza - The International Committee of the Red Cross, represented by its Gaza Strip Operations Director Mr. Jocelyn Deforge, conducted a field tour of some of CMWU's facilities and projects, accompanied on the tour by CMWU's Director-General Eng. Monther Shoblaq, and Eng. Mo'taz Abu Al-Qumbuz, Head of the Supervision Section at the Utility, with the inspection tour including some of CMWU's projects specific to seawater desalination, sewage treatment, and rainwater collection.
The tour began with a visit to the temporary Khan Younis treatment plant, with Eng. Shoblaq giving a comprehensive explanation of the plant's history, the Red Cross's interventions at this plant, and the role of the current projects being implemented by the Red Cross, particularly the transmission line project from Al-Wafiya station to the basins, as well as the gravity line from the basins to the sea.
The tour also included a visit to the rainwater collection basin in Al-Amal neighborhood area in Khan Younis governorate, south of the Strip, with Eng. Abu Al-Qumbuz giving an explanation of the project and the extent of benefiting from it and the challenges it faced during the implementation stages, up to this advanced stage of the project.
The visiting delegation then moved to Bani Suheila reservoir project, where Eng. Shoblaq explained the importance of this project, in terms of supplying the eastern villages with good quantities of water, also explaining the mechanism of distributing it to residents living east of the governorate, and the stages of implementing the project, which was funded by the Islamic Bank, the World Bank, and the International Committee of the Red Cross.
The field tour concluded with a visit to the seawater desalination plant south of the Strip, funded by the European Union through UNICEF, with Eng. Shoblaq giving a comprehensive explanation of the project, the existing challenges, and the future plans to expand the plant and construct the central desalination plant.
The visiting delegation then moved to CMWU's main headquarters, where Eng. Maher Al-Najjar gave a presentation on the projects and achievements carried out by CMWU.
At the conclusion of his visit, Mr. Jocelyn expressed his appreciation for the efforts made by CMWU in implementing these projects despite the existing challenges and obstacles, and affirmed the continuation of the International Committee of the Red Cross's support for the water and sanitation sector, and its keenness on permanent cooperation with CMWU in advancing this vital and sensitive service sector.
