CMWU Opens Water Reservoirs in Abasan and Ma'an Areas in Khan Younis Governorate
CMWU and the Palestinian Water Authority opened water reservoirs in Abasan and Ma'an areas in Khan Younis governorate, funded by the World Bank and USAID.
The opening ceremony was held in the presence of Water Authority Chairman Minister Mazen Ghanem, CMWU's Director-General Eng. Monther Shoblaq, a World Bank representative, Khan Younis Governor Dr. Ahmed Al-Shaibi, Abasan Al-Kabira Municipality's Mayor Dr. Mahmoud Abu Diraz, representatives of a number of municipalities, and a group of mukhtars, notables, and residents of the two areas.
In turn, Minister Ghanem praised the efforts of all the contributors to completing these two important and vital reservoirs, which come as part of the efforts made to improve water services in the Gaza Strip amid the crisis the Strip is suffering from in this aspect, with a number of other projects and reservoirs having been opened before them, the latest of which were Deir al-Balah and Nuseirat reservoirs, thanking CMWU and all the working crews for completing these two reservoirs in the best manner.
Eng. Monther Shoblaq also expressed his sincere thanks to the World Bank, the Water Authority, and all supporters and contributors to the success of this project and all the Utility's projects, affirming that these two reservoirs would contribute to increasing water quality and improving the delivery of the service to residents of Khan Younis governorate, affirming CMWU's continuation in inaugurating more reservoirs, wells, and vital projects in the field of water and sanitation, to contribute to improving the service provided to residents in all cities and camps of the Gaza Strip.
It is worth noting that Abasan reservoir's capacity is 1,800 cubic meters, funded through the World Bank and under the direct supervision of the Water Authority and CMWU, at a value of $680,000, with this reservoir serving Abasan town and the number of beneficiaries being 30,000 people, with the reservoir fed from the main Bani Suheila reservoir, which is fed from two sources, the first being water wells located west of Khan Younis city, and the second source being from the Mekorot line, with the water blended in this reservoir and then pumped to both east Bani Suheila, Khuza'a town, and Abasan town, with this project also implementing the networks feeding the reservoir and the distribution networks with a total length of 2.5 km. The work also included constructing a service building, a guard room, and a disinfection room, in addition to the external fences and everything needed of control valves, electrical panels, and a backup generator.
It is worth noting that the World Bank contributed to improving the water situation in Khan Younis governorate in general, having contributed to constructing the main Bani Suheila reservoir, in addition to constructing Khuza'a reservoir, which was operated last year.
